Winter Skin Care
Lets make this winter less about dry skin and more about rosy glowing cheeks.
Winter is setting in and we need to gear up for a new skin care routine. If I am not wrong then winters are meant to be festive and fashionable, so lets get those colorful scarves and boots out of the closet and banish the dry skin to get the radiant glow in few simple steps. Dry skin is just a manifestation of a deeper damage that is occurring to your skin at the cell level, which in turn leads to clogged pores and cracked skin. Not only can that be painful but also lead to pigmentation or scarring.
1. Change your skin care routine
Its time to check your current skincare routine to see if it can stand the dry winter air. Products meant for summer or spring need to go back in the drawers for a couple of months. Select winter skin care products based on your skin type and few essential ingredients such as Vitamin E or various oils meant specially for skin care which do not clog the pores. Vitamin E is known for its powerful antioxidant and nourishing properties. Surprisingly it is one of the few vitamins the human body cannot produce naturally and must assimilate from external sources. You need a regimen which repairs and fortifies your skin by penetrating to a deep cell level and restoring lost nutrients.
2. Exfoliate, Moisturize and Moisturize
Look out for moisturizers that are oil based. Since oil based products create a protective film over skin and help in retaining the body’s natural oils which impart a radiant glow. Get separate moisturizer for your body and face as facial skin is much more sensitive and thinner. Well hydrated skin with regular moisture levels has no problem shedding the damaged outer layers to welcome new skin. But this process becomes slow when skin is dry with inadequate moisture levels. This leads to visible signs of damage such as dull, dry and rough skin that you see on the surface.
Don’t forget to exfoliate away dead dry skin. Try homemade sugar and honey scrubs not only are the mild on skin and wallet but also most effective when it comes to fight away the dead flaky skin.
3. Sunscreens are meant for all seasons
If you thought sunscreens are meant for summers then you are totally wrong they are very much important in winters too. Get yourself a broad spectrum sunscreen. Apply generously and reapply as often or before stepping out of the house.
4. Hand and Feet care
Hand and Feet are the most neglected parts during winter. Dryness can lead to pigmentation, itching, cracking and even swelling. Replace your hand cleanser with milder and moisturizing ones. Also get a heavy duty moisturizer for hands and feet. Best way to combat dryness would be to apply your moisturizer at night and put on your most comfortable pair of socks and gloves. Not all skin is the same, different parts of the body have different skin that has to be treated with specific products. Skin on the palm of the hands does not have hair glands and hence do not have oil glands and therefore they get the most dry and require specialized intensive moisturizing care. Similarly skin on the face is thinner than the skin on your legs / arms and needs something lighter to allow skin to breathe freely.
5. Avoid super hot baths,
Sound of hot bath sounds heavenly during winters, but they play havoc on the natural protective outermost layer of the skin. Thus skin becomes prone to more dryness and sun damage. Skip those hot baths and enjoy warm showers if possible. Adding few drops of body oil to the water bath does help in retaining moisture. Enjoy the winters and the festivities around it. Don’t let the dry air play with your skin and make it look dull.
